Who is Doctor Robert Talac?
I am a founder of Advanced Spine Institute. I may not be your typical spine surgeon. I am personable, interactive, and enjoy spending a considerable amount of time getting to know you. Most patients come to see me with back or neck problems that significantly affect their quality of life. Therefore, the first thing I want to achieve is to understand how are these problems affecting your life. It helps me to make individualized expert advise. I always treat the patient, not X-ray, not MRI, myelogram or EMG.
I focus not only on alleviating the pain but also on restoring function and performance. I always try to find a non-surgical option first. My ultimate goal is to relief the pain through restoration of function and performance. Pain is just a signal that something is not right. Recent evidence suggests that traditional approaches to pain treatment (i.e bed rest and narcotics) may be contra productive in long run. The more the patient rests weaker s/he gets. Weak and inflexible muscles cause more pain. The pain usually requires more medications. Once patient get into this vicious circle, s/he becomes more dependent on medication and grows more inactive and disabled. Functional treatment achieves pain relief through gentle movement. In fact, about 90% of my patients are cured using non-surgical treatment. If surgery is necessary, I strive to perform a least invasive procedure necessary to solve your problem. I have spent over 10 years learning and perfecting innovative technologies and procedures that allow for faster healing and recovery.
I was born in Czechoslovakia, Europe. I have attended Medical School of Masaryk University in Brno. I have completed a General Surgery training as well as fellowship training is surgical oncology in Europe. I have earned PhD in Biophysics from Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic. I also have Diploma in Minimally Invasive Surgery from University of Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France. In 1999, relocated to United States.. I was offered a clinician/scientist position at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. I spent 4 years at Mayo Clinic where I was blessed to work along side of best physicians in the US. I have only learnt and perfected cutting-edge strategies that promotes healing and recovery, but internalized most important lesson in practicing medicine – “the needs of the patient come first”. I have also completed training in Orthopedic Surgery at University of California, San Diego, CA and fellowship training in spine surgery at Center for Spine Health, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH.
