How To Avoid Back Pain While Traveling For The Holidays

If you’re planning on traveling for the holidays, you may already be dreading it – especially if you already suffer from neck and back pain. Here at Advanced Spine Institute, your local Houston TX back doctor, we have a lot of patients asking us for tips on how they can make their holiday travel plans less painful. We’ve got some tips for all of you!Be careful with you luggage – lift it in stages. A muscle strain normally occurs at the end of one’s range of motion when they’re lifting a heavy item. Move slowly when you’re lifting a heavy piece of your luggage to avoid a muscle strain. For example, when you’re lifting a bag into an overhead bin on the airplane, first lift it up to the top of the seat and then into the bin in a separate motion.

Bring your own back support along for travel. Seats in cars, planes, trains, and other modes of transportation don’t provide the right type of support to your lower back and neck. Take along a lumbar support pillow to make your seat more comfortable during travel. If you don’t have one, or you forget to bring yours, you can also take a jacket or a sweater and roll it up to provide support for your lower back.

If you’re experiencing back pain that won’t go away or maybe you’re just tired of living with pain, call us at Advanced Spine Institute today. We’re here to help you live a life without pain.

More Tips On Avoiding Back Pain During Holiday Travel

If you suffer from neck and back pain, you’re probably already dreading holiday travel this year! Don’t worry though, here at Advanced Spine Institute, your local back doctor in Houston TX, we’ve got some great tips to help you travel with less pain.Support your feet while traveling. Proper support for your lower back also requires that you have support from the ground up. If your feet are placed on a firm surface while you’re sitting, you’re putting less stress on your lower back. If your seat is too high, rest your feet on a foot rest.

Pack lightly! A heavy pack can can be more than just an inconvenience, it can aggrevate back pain and cause injury. To avoid straining your back, if you can’t pack lightly, you should use luggage that rolls on wheels. Also, it’s better to use a few small bags rather than one large bag so that when you go to lift your pack out of the car or into the overhead bin, you don’t strain your back.

Check your posture when traveling. Sitting for prolonged periods of time can aggrevate back pain, too, especially if you’re sitting with bad posture. Make sure that your back is aligned with the back of your seat and that your headrest is supporting the middle of your neck.

Holiday Travel Coming Up? Avoid Pain With These Tips

With a lot of our patients traveling for the holidays this year, many of them are asking for tips on how to travel without all the neck and back pain they normally suffer. With thousands of people packing up and boarding planes or taking road trips in their cars this holiday season, we wanted to give some tips on how you can travel with comfort instead of pain from your local back doctor in Houston TX.

We know this isn’t as possible in the car, but when you’re on a long plane ride, get up and move as much as you can. Sitting in one position for a long time stiffens your back muscles and causes pain. We suggest getting up every 20-30 minutes so that you can stretch your core body muscles, stimulate blood flow, and stimulate oxygen flow to muscles. This helps soft tissue and muscles from stiffening. Even 10 seconds of movement is better than sitting still!

Sitting for extended periods of time can also cause stiffness and pressure on the hamstrings which in turn causes pain and pressure in the lower back. Stretch your legs and hips by standing up and bending forward at the waist, keeping your legs as straight as you can. Hold this position as long as you can, we suggest at least 30 seconds. You can also sit at the end of a chair and straight one leg in front of your body and place the heel on the floor. Sit up straight, push your belly button frontward by arching your back, and hold for 30 seconds.

What is a Herniated Disc?

At some point you have heard the term “herniated disc.” Yet, do you know exactly what a herniated disc is? Do you know the location or the consequences of a herniated disc? What you may not know about herniated discs may be causing you unnecessary back pain. If you are suffering from chronic or acute back pain, there is a back pain treatment in Houston, Texas that may work wonders for you.

A herniated disc (also known as a slipped disc or ruptured disc) is a problem that stems from the intervertebral disc that is located between each spinal segment. This intervertebral disc is rounded, acts as means of shock absorption, and is made up of two rings; nucleus pulposus (center of disc), and annulus fibrosus (outer ring.) A herniation occurs when the nucleus pulposus pushes against, or breaks through, the annulus fibrosus. These injuries can because the outer ring of the intervertebral disc can become weak or worn from wear, age, and injury. Most commonly we see herniated discs in the lumbar spine.

When the nucleus pulposus breaks through the outer ring at the wrong location (toward the spinal column) the herniation can impinge on the spinal column. Sciatic pain is one of the symptoms of a central protrusion. You may also experience numbness and tingling, pain with certain motions, or decreased mobility.

Most Common Low Back Injuries

The back is one of the most commonly injured areas of the body. Your back is a complicated structure made up of bones, ligaments, tendons, musculature, and nerves. There is a growing trend of back pain among Americans and the most common back injuries have been calculated. Back pain treatment in Houston, Texas is available for those who are suffering from acute or chronic back pain.

The back (spine) is divided into three separate areas; cervical, thoracic, and lumbar. The majority or back injuries occur at the lumbar spine. The most common low back injuries involve sprains and strains of the lumbar spine, herniated discs, and disc degeneration. There is also the possibility that you suffer from non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) which is linked to the soft tissue of the lumbar spine.

NSLBP is often caused by hypo-mobility (tightness) or hyper-mobility (looseness) of the soft tissue structures. Overuse during exercise can add stress to the spine which then produces pain. Age can also cause age-related degeneration of cushioning structures which can lead to pain. Sprains and strains of the soft tissue structures can occur from auto accidents, improper lifting techniques, lack of mobility, or quick over-extension movements.

Herniated discs on the other hand tend to create lumbar pain at a specific level. You may also have associated numbness or tingling of one or both legs and glutes. A herniation is an injury to the intervertebral disc which can cause mild to severe pain based off of the degree of protrusion.

The only way to decrease your chronic pain is to visit a back pain treatment clinic in Houston, TX. The experienced and professional physicians at Advanced Spine Institute will diagnosis the root of your problem and develop a personalized treatment plan. Stop living in pain.
